Lorraine Mamvura

Biography

Lorraine Mamvura (b. 1 June 1982, Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe) is a Shona stone sculptor. Apprenticed to her husband Elvis Mamvura at Chitungwiza Arts Centre from 1998, she now sculpts full-time. Working mainly in opal and springstone, her pieces — including Sisters Love and Bride as the Master Drummer — celebrate women and challenge the idea that stone carving is "a man's job". She has received the Pathfinder Ubuntu Water is Life and EU United in Diversity awards.
